December 2017
On Monday, December 4, 2017 at 3 p.m. ET, the Coalition for Juvenile Justice (CJJ) will host a 60-minute webinar to share information about "Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Youth Incarceration."
Disproportionate minority contact (DMC) remains a major issue within the juvenile justice system. The Sentencing Project has undertaken new research on the issue of DMC to discover the rate at which youth of color are incarcerated as compared to their white peers. Their new findings show that African American youth are five times more likely to be incarcerated than white youth, while Native American youth are three times more likely to be incarcerated than white youth. Latino youth, meanwhile, are 65% more likely to be held in detention. During the webinar, the project team will delve into their recent research findings, and discuss potential solutions to this ongoing problem.
