SOAR—A Reentry Tool for Individuals Involved in the Criminal Justice System

24 Wed
October 2018

On Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2018, at 3:00 PM ET, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) SOAR TA Center, in partnership with the SAMHSA GAINS Center, will host a webinar entitled, "SOAR—A Reentry Tool for Individuals Involved in the Criminal Justice System."

The Social Security Administration (SSA) disability benefit programs—Supplemental Security Income and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSI/SSDI)— can provide income and health insurance benefits that support a healthy return to communities for previously incarcerated individuals who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness and have a serious mental illness, medical impairment, and/or a co-occurring substance addiction disorder. SSI/SSDI Outreach, Access, and Recovery (SOAR) is a model that can help, and this webinar will feature speakers who will share their best practices for implementing SOAR in a county jail, state correctional system. The speakers will also discuss how SOAR implementation in criminal justice settings can be a strong reentry tool to increasing housing stability and promoting post-release success.
