Webinar: Strategies for Effective Facility-Based Behavior Management

14 Wed
November 2012

The National Center for Youth in Custody (NC4YC) is proud to present the webinar: “Behavior Management and De-escalation"

Nov. 14, 2012 2:00 PM EST - 3:30 AM EST

This webinar is the second in a series of webinar presentations focusing on conditions of confinement within juvenile facilities. Registration is not yet open for this webinar. Please subscribe to our email list for updates.

Behavior management in juvenile detention and correctional facilities, and adult facilities, can be challenging. Agencies charged with housing young people must meet youth’s needs while simultaneously ensuring staff and youth safety. For the practitioner, questions abound: How do we engage residents in facility programming and services? How can we minimize and safely respond to incidents? How do we best incentivize positive youth behavior?

The next webinar in the NC4YC series on improving conditions of confinement will highlight strategies for effective facility-based behavior management. The discussion will explore the impact of certain practices on youth behavior—including isolation, room confinement, and use of force—as well as effective alternatives and promising approaches. The webinar will also review the use of incentive-based programming and strategies for fostering positive staff-youth relationships.

Panelists include:

Michael H., youth advocate, college student, and former resident in juvenile facilities;

Richard Gentry, Director, Ingham County Youth Center, Lansing, MI;

Kathy Starkovich, Deputy Chief, 18th Judicial Circuit Court's Department of Probation & Court Services, Wheaton, IL;

Rodney Bouffard, Superintendent, Long Creek Youth Development Center, South Portland, ME.
